All ELM Products 6.x with System and Log Licensing.

Purpose

  • You would like to configure ELM Enterprise Manager to receive or collect syslog messages from a device.

Assumptions

  • The ELM software has been activated and is not in evaluation mode.

Configuration

Create a New Virtual IP Agent in the ELM console or use the ELM Auto Add Agent option

Create new Virtual IP Agent using the new agent wizard.

  1. From the ELM Console right click on the All Agents category under the Monitoring folder.
  2. Select New > Agent from the right click menu.
  3. Type the IP address of the ESXi server.
  4. Complete the wizard assigning a license and giving your monitor item a name.
  5. Complete “Create new syslog receiver monitor item” below for your new agent.

ELM Auto Add Agent Option

  1. Open the properties of the ELM Enterprise server service.
  2. Go to the Options tab and select “Auto Add New Agents” (This is checked by default)
  3. Click “Apply” then OK
  4. Complete “Create new syslog receiver monitor item” for your new agent.

Create new syslog receiver monitor item.

  1. Right click on the All Monitors category under the Monitoring folder and select New > Monitor item from the right click menu.
  2. Select Syslog Receiver from the drop down box then click Next.
  3. Specify the protocol and port number (default is UDP 514) then click Next.
  4. Make sure the check box for Auto Assign Monitor item to Agents is checked then finish the wizard.

Example

How to configure Syslog for a ESXi host using vSphere Client inventory:

  1. Right click on host and click “Edit Settings”
  2. Select the “Configuration” tab then click “Advanced Settings” under Software
  3. Select Syslog in the tree.
  4. In the Hostname box type the IP address of the ELM server
  5. In the Port box type the port you used in the ELM server for you Syslog Monitor item
  6. Click OK and you should start seeing syslog messages appear in ELM
