Microsoft Exchange Server Monitoring

ELM Enterprise Manager monitors server system, security and application logs, sends and receives alerts as events occur, collects and monitors health and performance, and takes corrective action when necessary. ELM Enterprise Manager monitors all versions of Exchange server, including Exchange 2000 Server using MAPI, enabling end-to-end and quality of service monitoring of Exchange server's in the Exchange Organization.

With ELM Enterprise Manager, System Administrators can take a proactive approach to managing the Exchange infrastructure. ELM Enterprise Manager includes an Exchange Monitor that performs end-to-end monitoring of Microsoft Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. This type of monitoring allows the user to specify a quality of service (QoS) threshold for internal email delivery and notifies the right people when that threshold is not met. Multiple Exchange Monitors can be created, enabling end-to-end monitoring of mail delivery between all Exchange servers in the organization.

To do this, the ELM Enterprise Manager Server uses three mailboxes in the Exchange organization for each Exchange Monitor:

  • Administrator mailbox: This mailbox is used to establish a MAPI session to an Exchange Server in the organization. No email is set to or from this mailbox; it is used for session purposes only.
  • Source Mailbox: This is one of the two end-points; in this case, this is the originating mailbox.
  • Target (Destination) Mailbox: This is the other end-point; in this case, this is the destination mailbox.

Messages sent between these two mailboxes are automatically removed. No mailbox maintenance is required for the end-point mailboxes. When a message is sent from the source mailbox, an internal clock is started. If the message is not received by the target mailbox within the QoS threshold, an event will be generated.

ELM Enterprise Manager:

  • monitors the Exchange Server system, security and application events in real-time, and stores the events in a database for archiving and auditing
  • collects and stores all published performance counters, including Exchange-related performance counters, for baselining, trending and capacity planning
  • monitors email queues for backlogs or build-ups that indicate messaging problems
  • monitors MAPI availability, end-to-end messaging, and quality of service
  • creates top-level and drill-down reports of event data and performance data
  • sends and receives alert notifications, including via email and pager, when events occur, services fail or performance exceeds thresholds
  • automatically restarts failed services
  • stops and starts services locally and remotely
  • kills processes locally and remotely
  • monitors the availability of SMTP gateways, Outlook Web Access, and POP3 servers
  • processes and forwards SNMP traps;
  • and more...
