Advanced Filtering for Notification Methods - "What You See is What You Get"

ELM includes a powerful Notification Engine that enables you to customize notifications and take corrective action to suit your organizational objectives. You can have separate notification methods for different Event Views, or a single notification method for all similar Event Views. For example, you could have one method that describes how to notify a database administrator about important database related events, and another method for notifying a security administrator about important security related events. You could have yet another method that notifies all Help Desk technicians when a critical server is down.

Notification Methods pass the full event information to the notification engine, which then forwards that information according to the methods selected. You may completely customize the message sent via the Notification Method. This is important when there are restrictions on message length, as in the case of a mobile pager.

ELM includes many notification methods. One notification method is specifically designed to run scripts, batch files, or customer written programs. The Command Script Notification Method empowers you to take corrective action within a notification rule or when the monitor detects the proper condition.

Notification Methods are assigned to individual Event Views in ELM. This makes it very easy to configure ELM to let you know what is happening on your network with your event data using the "What You See is What You Get" philosophy.

Custom Event Views can easily be created to allow for notifications on very specific event criteria. This allows for great flexibility based on how you would like notifications to run. Some may prefer event type specific notifications while others my wish to assign notifications to specific operational groups or categories of servers. However you wish to approach it, ELM provides the advanced capabilities to support virtually any infrastructure.

Types of Notification Methods in ELM Enterprise Manager

Email Notification

ELM supports email notifications via the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP). You may customize the message sent, including the From field, the message text (including variables and information from any event), and the size of the message. You may configure the message with compressed white space, which provides better viewing on smart phones, pagers and other SMTP-capable devices with limited view screens.

More Email Notification Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Mail Notification.

Pager

Get urgent event messages when your email server is down with the Pager notification. Through a modem on the ELM Server System in conjunction with your pager service, you can receive messages regarding event and system activity on your paging device.

More Pager Notification Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Pager Notification.

Command Script

The Command Script Notification Method can execute a command, a command line application, a batch file, or a script. You may pass event information in the form of variables, leveraging information in the event, such as the computer name or the message details field in any batch files or scripts that are executed.

Scripts and command line files empower you to automatically initiate corrective action. When combined with Resource Kit, third-party and custom tools, you can cause almost any action to be taken when needed: restarting services, rebooting systems, copying, moving or deleting files, etc.

More Command Script Notification Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Command Script Notification.

ELM Advisor

ELM Advisor is a Notification Area Icon that alerts you of changing conditions. Audibles and popups indicate events without disruption to your workflow.

Other Available Notification Methods

Forward Event

An ELM Server can reliably forward any Event to another ELM Server, enabling you to design and deploy ELM in a tiered manner, or to monitor multiple locations from a centralized location.

For additional details on multi-tier architecture and forwarding, please visit the Advanced Architectures page of the ELM Architecture section.

More Event Forwarding Notification Type Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Forwarding Events.

Post Web Page Form

ELM supports the posting of a form to an internal or external Web site as a notification method. If you are using a web-based Help Desk application, ELM can automatically complete a support ticket and enter it into the Help Desk application.

More Post Web Form Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Post Web Form.

SNMP OID/Trap

An ELM Server can send SNMP traps as a Notification Method. Any event received by the ELM Server can be repackaged and transmitted as an SNMP trap to any SNMP management systems in the organization.

The ELM Server also includes an SNMP OID Notification Method. It can take any valid SNMP Object ID (OID) and write it to the specified target host.

More SNMP OID/Trap Notification Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on SNMP Notification.

Play Sound File

The ELM Server supports the playing of sound files in WAV format at the ELM Server for a server notification method. ELM includes some sound files for your convenience, but you can add your own WAV file to use as a notification method.

More Play Sound File Notification Details
Check out the ELM Help Guide pages on Sound File.

Send Syslog Message

ELM supports native, integrated Syslog messages as a notification method. This enables administrators to forward alerts for centralized management in cross-platform environments.
